I gave Lisa a hard time but I’m very glad that she ignored me and called for an ambulance that took me to Borgess. They tell me that the quicker you can get medical care when you have what I had the better the outcome.
Before that morning I had been having a little numbness in my hands and some slurred speech for about a year and a half. The doctor said I had high blood pressure and gave me medicine. The symptoms seemed to be better and I felt better. I thought I was on the right path with the medicine.
One morning in mid-June, though, I was just getting out of bed when I lost my balance. I tumbled against the dresser and fell to the floor. Lisa asked if I could get up but I had a hard time moving my leg. She was getting worried and wanted to call for an ambulance, but I told her I was OK. Fortunately, she didn’t believe me and called 9-1-1. I’m glad she did because I was having a stroke.
At my request I was taken to Borgess where the medical professionals ran a series of tests that revealed a major blockage in the carotid artery on the left side of my neck. I only remember bits and pieces of what happened next, but when I awoke later I was feeling really good. They told Lisa that I had 100% blockage in my left carotid artery and the doctor pulled it out.
The care at Borgess was excellent. It was very timely because of the severity of the blockage. The fact that I walked out of Borgess without limitations is amazing. I’ve always felt you were a good hospital and I trust you.
