Body Mass Index (BMI) is a great tool for gauging how healthy you or your family member’s weight is. The BMI’s definitions of overweight and underweight are correlated with having a greater risk of developing many serious diseases and conditions, including:

  • Mental health and self-esteem issues
  • High blood pressure
  • Heart disease and stroke
  • Sleep apnea and breathing problems
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Some forms of cancer
  • Osteoarthritis

There are a number of other things to consider when determining health risks, but BMI is a great starting point for everyone. Other considerations can include waist measurement and muscle mass. A larger waist relative to normal weight can increase disease risk and, since muscle weighs more than fat, a healthy body builder will have a higher BMI than a sedentary person of similar measurements
